After a burnout: Getting back at your own wheel and your energy.

After a burnout, you can find ourself metaphorically in a car where the controls no longer work as they used to before.

Sometimes, being stuck in 1st gear and being unable to accelerate efficiently by shifting up gears.

Or blocked in 6th gear, unable to downshift, at risk of stalling when trying to slow down.

Or with brakes that no longer respond as before, sometimes elongating the braking distance, sometimes coming to an abrupt and unexpected stop.

You find ourself alternating between ON and OFF, stuck in either immobility or at full throttle. Feeling no longer in control and safe in our vehicle. Having become a passenger of yourself.

The old way doesn’t work anymore – but it is the only one you have. You can understand why the burnout happened, but don’t know yet how to do differently.

A burnout is hence not just exhaustion. It is a shock that changes your neurophysiology.

Personally I experienced it like change of the main fuse in my system:
Before, with a 50A fuse, allowing me to stay for a long time in high energy, even with only few phases of deep recuperation, before feeling exhaustion.
After, with a 2A fuse, blowing at the slightest energy load, even in very trivial contexts.

This OFF reaction is a protection as a consequence of this experience that brought you to your existential limits on a physical and mental plan.

Getting back at the wheel, means understanding these changes and daring to go into the unknown of « doing differently », on all plans.

Getting back at the wheel, means starting to observe, analyse and understand the reasons and moments where the fuse blows. Without judgement.

Creating gently and subtly your own new ways of doing, aligned with yourself. And to discover your own « fuel stations » and fuels.

Rebuilding the trust in yourself, litteraly:
the trust that you are safe within and with yourself.

This is all but trivial et takes patience: to (re-)connect with yourself.

Because, no, you are not « broken »!

The fuse will again increase in capacity with the development of an approach and understanding of yourself, based on being aligned with and in respect of yourself.

From it results true resilience – with well-being, physical and mental, as new foundations.

In my case it took almost 2 years before I got back to my previous capacity, with today very different, varied and diverse rhythms and speeds. Alive and subtle.

Without forcing, nor stressing in moments when it doesn’t work, when my car goes sideways. With the return of joy of life, deep calm and the joy of challenge.
