Over the years, I realized that the energy consumption of my car was linked to my emotional state and own energy consumption.
How I drive my car mirrors how I drive myself: how I am able to shift my neurophysiological states.
Driving is not a rational, simple affair.
It is a mentally and physically complex task, being exposed to continuous change and need for adaptation. And as in every other context : awareness and the ability to shift neurophysiological states changes our driving accordingly.
Offensive, aggressive, calm, centred, defensive, distracted,…these states get at the wheel, turning ourselves into a passenger.
Our reactions are always the attempt of our neurophysiology to keep us safe. Unfortunately, they are not always best adapted to what is, on the outside and for ourselves.
Revving high when there is no necessity. Getting stuck in high gear. Unable to shift up. Scared of losing control of your own energy.
« If you want to know a person observe how he/she drives », was my grandmothers advice.
Ari Vatanen, a finnish rally driver in the 80’s-90’s, said something similar in an interview: «Driving is in a way the extension of your personality».
Driving is linked to our neurophysiological state and our ability to shift it. It is an immediate reflection of us in this moment in time.
Driving and piloting are hence the big metaphor I use for navigating the complexity of living in a world of unknowns, constantly changing variables on the outside and inside.
Leading to neurophysiological reactions requiring awareness and presence in each moment to shift states, to connect with others, to be safe, to learn and adapt best to changed settings while remaining aligned with ourselves.
Be it on a metaphorical small road at walking speed, a motorway, stuck in a traffic jam, searching for a parking space at the supermarket, on an icetrack, a closed road in a rally setting,… .
